A roll in shower conversion replaces a tub with a barrier-free shower large enough for a wheelchair to enter. It serves households in Aztec, NM that need full wheelchair access rather than a simple low step.
What the Project Involves
The key difference from other conversions is space and floor design. A roll-in shower needs enough room to enter, turn, and position a chair, so installers measure the bathroom and plan the opening and the clearances around it. The floor is slightly sloped toward the drain, and the entry stays flush with the bathroom floor. The route from the bathroom entrance to the shower is checked as well, since a chair needs clear passage.
After the tub is removed, the floor is rebuilt for the slope, the area is waterproofed, and the shower walls, drain, and fixtures are installed. Grab bars, a seat, and a handheld shower are set on reinforced blocking and positioned for the user. A wide opening or curtain is often used instead of a swinging glass door.
When This Option Makes Sense
- The user bathes while seated in a shower chair or wheelchair.
- A caregiver needs room to stand beside the user.
- The bathroom has, or can be modified to have, enough turning space.
- You need a long-term solution for lasting mobility needs.
What Affects the Price
The available space, floor reconstruction, drain type, wall changes, and accessories such as seats and bars all affect cost. Expanding the shower beyond the old tub footprint adds framing and plumbing work. Exact pricing for a roll in shower conversion depends on the project and a quote. Ask about permit and licensing requirements in Aztec, NM before work begins. Because needs differ from one person to the next, the plan works best when the user helps choose seat height, bar locations, and control placement.
